A Question of Interest for Communication Research

The research question that interests me the most would be Conversation Analysis: between the males-females in society. Conversation analysis (CA) is an approach to the study of social interaction that was developed through the collaborative research of “Harvey Sacks, Emanuel Schegloff, Gail Jefferson, and their students in the 1960s and early 1970s.” The definition of Conversation Analysis as defined the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Linguistics is as follows: “Conversation analysis is an approach to the study of social interaction and talk-in-interaction that, although rooted in the sociological study of everyday life, has exerted significant influence across the humanities and social sciences including linguistics. Drawing on recordings (both audio and video) naturalistic interaction (unscripted, non-elicited, etc.) conversation analysts attempt to describe the stable practices and underlying normative organizations of interaction by moving back and forth between the close study of singular instances and the analysis of patterns exhibited across collections of cases. Four important domains of research within conversation analysis are turn-taking, repair, action formation and ascription, and action sequencing.”

Communication as social interaction among individuals is a necessity of everyday life; males and females have distinct communicative competencies that they have a tendency to adopt. In addition this there are societal communication expectations and perception bias’s placed on each gender, resulting preconceived thought/beliefs and separate conversational strategies developed to accomplish interaction goals amid individuals. The objective of my research would be to outline these perspectives and language/communication methods used by conversational participants of differing genders (Male and Female) through Conversation Analysis (CA). Additionally, I would conduct Participant and non-participant, observation, experiments, surveys, interviews, and Observational trials to produce an impeccable Qualitative Research Project.
